MAIDENHAIR FERNS (ADIANTUM) for the 2013 SEASON

.

The Maidenhair Fern Family: The delicate and beautifully foliaged fern group which do require extra humidity while growing in a well drained "sweet" medium, but which are well worth the effort to grow.

16083 ACROSTICHUM DANAEIFOLIUM FEL TGH CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Giant Leather Fern" Aquatic genus native to the West Indies on through northern South America easily grown in a large container sunk in water where it produces thickly substanced pinnate fronds--outside of the tropics this is a conservatory subject, not a houseplant. Avoid chill.

10009 ADIANTUM HISPIDULUM POLYP CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 "Australian Maidenhair." Forked horn-like fronds emerge red pink on top of the wiry black stems. Forms an attractive slowly increasing mound. Reliable if kept evenly moist and cool; demands quite bright light and sweet soil to thrive--when you lightly lime the other Adiantums, avoid dusting this species with lime. We stock selections of this easily grown but dainty appearing "Maidenhair" with pinkish hued new pinnae. Seems more tolerant of low humidity than other species.

10011 ADIANTUM MACROPHYLLUM POLYP CGH HP PRICE: $ 12.50 New for 2013. A Maidenhair of interest like the "Adianutm peruvianum" with larger leaflets and distinct structure. This stays shorter and is of ineterest yearround. Short-statured. Large fluted leaflets reddish maroon at first, then fading to silvery green. Very interesting. This has pink new foliage, thus it is often called the common name of "Peaches and Cream."

10013 ADIANTUM MICROPHYLLUM LITTLE LADY HP POLYP PRICE: $ 15.00 "Lace Maidenhair." Delicate divided fronds of pale green. We will ship very tiny plants because this is an extremely tiny cultivar. There is some delicate edging on the leaves of this plant. This is good for terrariums because of its size. We periodically rush short of the plant because it is so popular. If you order it and we are out, we will not charge your credit card for it.

11411 ADIANTUM PACIFIC MAID POLYP PRICE: $ 6.50 This clone of maidenhair has broad ruffled fronds and dense habit. We often recommend this for terrariums, although it does quite well in the open if grown in dappled light. Tropical plant for growlights too.

10014 ADIANTUM PERUVIANUM POLYP TERR TGH $ 10.00 "Silver Dollar Maidenhair Fern" Once again available. We hope to have these available again throughout the Fall Season! Large dramatic species with pink toned new foliage hardening into rich green arching fronds. Must have high humidity to perform well--loves a large Wardian Case as its home (this is far too large for a small or narrow terrarium); nonetheless, if given a cool bright windowsill and a pebble tray, it will also become an impressive specimen given time and humidity; always a star in any hobby greenhouse. Always a popular and much sought after dramatic rarer plant!

11626 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM FRAGRANTISSIMUM POLYPO CGH TERR HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Elegant arching blackish stems accent the dark narrow fans of this heirloom "Fragrant Maidenhair Fern"--Not quite the challenge as a houseplant that some of its fussier cousins are--and quite wonderful in any terrarium composition.

10016 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM FRITZ LUTHII POLYP PRICE: $ 6.50 Sturdy habit with a windswept aspect as fronds radiate from the central creeping rhizome. Beautiful elongated pinnae {fronds) are thickly spaced to give a shingled, layered effect always giving this a distinctive highly decorative appearance.

11651 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM PACOTTI POLYPO CGH TERR PRICE: $ 8.00 A small form of the "Maidenhair Fern" with erect quite compact fronds congested with sometimes overlapping deeply lobed segments shaped like teardrops, which are often further lobed. Fertile form perfect in a wardian case. Not always available; check with us.

10021 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM SNOWSTORM (TESSELATE) POLYPO CGH TERR PRICE: $ 15.00 A new variegated Maidenhair fern! We make a division after receiving your order and then ship only after the division is adequately established--so there will be a considerable wait once you have reserved this--please do not order if you are unable to wait for this to be readied for you. Numbers are limited. A new form of the above small form of the "Maidenhair Fern" with erect quite compact fronds congested with sometimes overlapping deeply lobed segments shaped like teardrops and hightly variegated. Can be a little difficult, but well worth the effort. Not always immediately available. Check with us.

10035 AGLAOMORPHA MEYENIANA ROBERTS CYT CGH $12.50 Available now for shipping. Sturdy variety with long, narrow fronds and occasional oak leaf shaped basal fronds as well. This "Lacy Bearspaw Fern" is perfect in hanging baskets with good drainage; the darkgreen leathery fronds never spore, suggesting this a hybrid.

You can find Treeferns under Alsophila, Blechnum, or Dicksonia

11438 ALSOPHILA COOPERII [CYATHEA AUSTRALIS] CYT CGH PRICE: $10.00 "Australian Tree Fern" Young plants present a spreading canopy of metallic deep green arching fronds supported by a cinnamon trunk; eventually a massive stunning specimen. Although we recommend greenhouse culture in our climate, some customers have successfully grown this as a house or large Wardian Case specimen, always keeping constant levels of humidity. We have grown this to a most impressive size on a sunny porch, glass enclosed during the winter.

88648 ARACHNIOIDES SIMPLICOR VARIEGATA POLY PRICE: $ 5.50 "Variegated Leather Leaf Fern." A small variegated fern which is slow growing and small. This is great for dish gardens and terrariums. It can also often withstand cold temperatures in the winter, so some Southern customers might want to try this outside in a rock garden area.

10047 ASPLENIUM BULBIFERUM FLORALEE POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 We have renewed supply of this wonderful fern. Available starting September, 2012 . It is a faster and more robust clone called "Floralee." It looks like the species we have always offered but grows much better. We got this clone from Santa Rosa Tropicals. We are happy with it. Long waxed lacy fronds with baby ferns growing on the leaf surface of the arching fronds. Easy (but slow) and choice. Cool spots tolerated.

11553 ASPLENIUM GOUDEYII POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.50 New introduction in the birds nest group of ferns, similar to Asplenium nidus and Asplenium Antiquum, but the leaves are more like rubber and the stature is shorter. This is an amazing little Bird's nest fern. We recommend because it does not need high humidity and extra care--yet perfect in a Wardian Case design.

10052 ASPLENIUM NIDUS ANTIQUUM POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Decorative "Japanese Birdsnest Fern" form with elegant slim fronds with occasional cresting on the tips, forming bowl-shaped specimens thriving in high-light areas, tolerating low humidity. Gives a Shirly Temple tone to your ferns.

03400 ASPLENIUM NIDUS LESLIE (TIP CRESTED) POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Decorative "Japanese Birdsnest Fern" form with elegant slim fronds great cresting and double cresting on the tips. Perhaps the newest and best of the Bird's Nest ferns! Only a few available. Order now. We are researching this; it might be a clone of Asplenium antiquum.

13399 ASPLENIUM NIDUS FIMBRIATUM POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 17.50 Now available. These can be shipped starting now. Order while they last. New pictures are above. These are great looking plants. Great for the fern lover. New and rather unusual fimbriated and lacerated form of the more common "Bird Nest" Fern.

11408 ASPLENIUM NIDUS ANTIQUUM OSAKA POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 14.50 Available for shipping in May. We have nice sized plants available now. Decorative "Japanese Birdsnest Fern" form with elegant slim fronds with wavy ruffled margins, forming bowl-shaped specimens thriving in high-light areas, tolerating low humidity. Gives a Shirly Temple tone to your ferns.

03400 ASPLENIUM NIDUS CRISPUM LASAGNE FERN POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Ruffled Birdsnest Fern' Fabulous bowl-shaped plant with "Lasagne Fern" pleated thick leathery undivided fronds--needs warm bright conditions to flourish. It has been many years since we have offered.

11634 BLECHNUM SILVER LADY (AFFINITY MOOREI) POLYPOD TGH CGH PRICE: $ 9.50 Available again now for Spring & Summer Shipping 2013. Charming "Dwarf Silver Tree Fern" with pewter gray toned arching fronds in a wide rosette atop the very gradually developing woody trunk. Needs good reliable humidity levels. This plant is also a possible subject for terrariums also.

10204 COLYSIS WRIGHTII POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Very compact deep green strap fronds with tiny depressions on surface like hammered tin. Very attractive small fern equally successful as a windowsill pot plant (looks great in a small bonsai pot as the wiry maroonish rhizomes wander over the lip) and as a small statured vertical accent in the sophisticated terrarium. Delicate appearance, yet easy to grow.

11431 COLYSIS WRIGHTII MONSTRIFERA POLYP CGH TERR PRICE: $ 9.25 Short glossy membraneous fronds, elaborately veined, widely fluted into undulant tips like an Art Nouveau fantasy. This tassled rare dwarf is petite enough to be perfect in a terrarium, yet quite able to cope with humidity levels of the windowsill or litegarden. Always one of the most popular dwarf ferns we offer--it looks difficult to grow, but is not. Certainly the most Lalique of any plants.

10240 CYRTOMIUM CARYOTIDEUM POLYP CGH HP PRICE: $ 7.50 "Clean Holly Fern." Sharply outlined holly shaped pinnae are closely layered on the short curved fronds' distinctive verdant green dull sheen also distinguishes this beautiful species native from Sri Lanka to Japan. Good container plant. Certainly a subtropical garden worthy fern in the South as will tolerate considerable chill.

10242 CYRTOMIUM FALCATUM ROCHEFORDIANUM POLYP CGH HP PRICE: $8.00 Long-lived Asian "Holly Fern" with dark leathery fronds with pinnae strongly frringed and toothed. Very reliable container subject as long as kept evenly moist. Not reliably winter hardy here if weather is severe for an extended period, yet considered and declared to be zone 6 hardy in many reference books. Our clone has not, evidentally, read or consulted any of these expert books.

10311 DAVALLIA FEJENNSIS MAJOR POLYP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Larger form of rabbit foot fern. Leaves are larger and heavier than the Davallia trichomanoides. Eventually makes a good basket. This may take a longer time to ship, because it is not too common. Inquire.

10321 DAVALLIA TRICHOMANOIDES POLYP HP PRICE: $ 7.50 The Standard brown rabbit foot fern. Sometimes called "Squirrel Foot." Foliage is finely highly divided and light to medium green--typically larger than its showier cousin, Humata tyermanii. See Thumbnails.

10484 DAVALLIA (HUMATA) TYERMANII POLYP HP PRICE: $ 6.25 "White Rabbit Foot." The arched, vigorous foot is covered with pure white hairs-- very furry. The fronds are lacy and deep, rich green. "Humata" is the true genus name, but we double referenced it because it looks so much like a Davallia and sometimes appears as such in the wholesale trade. Excellent as a pot plant, outstanding in a hanging basket for a houseplant as survives less than ideal levels of humidity.

11620 DICKSONIA ANTARTICA DIC CGH $10.00 The majestic "Tasmanian Treefern" needs cool (subtropic) very humid conditions to form its canopy of impressive outreaching deep green heavily textured fronds, with their network of straw toned veins, crowning the fibrous, wooly trunk. Avoid excessive heat during the winter.

10460 HEMIONITIS ARIFOLIA POL TER PRICE: $ 15.00 "Strawberry Fern" Felted tri-lobed fronds form a rosette of lovely small stature; plantlets form in center of fronds. Demands high humidity; abhors high temperatures.

10484 HUMATA TYERMANII POLYP HP PRICE: $ 6.25 "White Rabbit Foot." The arched, vigorous foot is cloaked by pure white hair --a very furry foot. The much divided fronds are lacy in appearance accented by being a deep, rich green. Excellent as a pot plant, outstanding in a hanging basket for a houseplant.

11430 LEPISORUS BICOLOR POLYPO CGH PRICE: $ 7.25 Resembles a sophisticated Pyrrosia with very slim surface rhizomes; strap fronds with indented polka-dot spore patches distinguish this "Sechuan Ribbon Fern" which Eco-Gardens considers Zone 8 hardy. Quite beautiful and distinct in pot or basket--even though its initial slow deliberate growth rate may test your patience. Grown in Camellia house conditions this creeping fern becomes fantastic, whether as a ground cover, as a hanging moss basket subject, a moss topiary addition, or as a gradually shingling climber on a moist protected wall.

10601 MICROGRAMMA HETEROPHYLLUM POLYP TGH TERR PRICE: $ 20.00 "Vine Fern" Miniature creeping feet with tiny upright fronds delicately haired; similar to M. lycopodioides & crew. Semi-epiphytic, thus be sure medium is perfectly drained. This is a very petite critter requiring considerable patience on its human caretaker's part.

10607 MICROGRAMMA PALMERII [NITIDA] POLYP TERR TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Many semiglossy small elongated-oval fronds held erect over the slim slightly flatened rhizomes meandering over cork or treefern; because this fern evolved upon tropical treetrunks, it survives low humidity better than some; but truely thrives when given artifical rain forest (good humidity) conditions in a terrarium where it forms a dense otherworldly groundcover.

11707 MICROLEPIA STRIGOSA SHI SHI POLYPOD HH CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Lion's Mane Fern" The pinnately compound fronds of the spec es form are extremely crested and frilled to create delicate billows of frothy lacy pinnae--nearly a Selaginella mimic. Cultivar also 'Cristata' or tasseled 'Corymbifera'--rather enjoys a mid-winter resting period before resuming spring growth.

11619 MICROSORIUM INTEGRIFOLIUM (PUNCTATUM) CRISTATUM POLYPOD TGH $ 85.00 Slowly creeping footed fern topped with leathery flared strap fronds (usually a foot long) with overlapping terminal crest giving the effect of an insane hairdresser's attempt to perm an afro with sea kelp. Rare & difficult.

10666 MICROSORIUM LONGISSISIMUM [HORT] POLYPOD HP TGH PRICE: $ 35.00 "Leather Strapleaf Fern" Short compact rhizome gives rise to ranked dark toned fronds with parchment texture decorated by curious depressed parallel veins (giving a washboard effect) decorating the upright furls with maroon thick midribs. Fab. Typically sent as a mossed division

10667MICROSORIUM MUSAFOLIUM POLYP TGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Banana Leaf Fern" Black rhizomes topped by incredible cream green fronds with radiating dark veins creating a mosaic. Due to the foliage texture resembling reptile skin, this is newly declared "Crocodyllus" and so patented as #13653! Long a favorite houseplant among our customers (not realizing that their old strap fern was about to reappear as a brand new plant!) because the leathery fronds are most tolerant of less than humid household conditions.

10671 MICROSORIUM PUNCTATUM GRANDICEPS POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Terrestrial Elkhorn Fern" The elegant upright jade like flat strap fronds terminate in fabulous crests. Excellent, hanging basket subject best known as Microsorium polycarpum grandiceps. If you like these crested "Elkhorns" be sure to refer also to the fabulously crested Campyloneuron phyllitidis cristatum also offered on this website.

10672 MICROSORIUM PUNCTATUM GRANDICEPS COMPACTA POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 " Dwarf Terrestrial Elkhorn Fern" The elegant upright jade like flat strap fronds terminate in fabulous crests. Excellent, more compact version of the above also good for hanging baskets but also good for larger wardian cases and growlight setups. Excellent "Dwarf Terrestial Elkhorn" with stout bright green simple fronds arching upward from the surface rhizome to flaunt its spreading much branched tip crests--one of the easiest ferns for the house as well as one of the showiest.

10664 MICROSORIUM PUNCTATUM SERRATUM [LACINIATUM] POLYP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 SOLD OUT AGAIN AT THIS TIME. DO NOT ORDER UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. THANKS. "Saw Tooth Kelp Fern" formerly M. intergifolium serrulatum. From strong woody surface root stalks arise dramatic ranks of tall membraneous erect strap fronds with their entire undulating glossed margins heavily toothed--a good first candidate to try to grow in this category of dramatic footed ferns with elaborate erect solid (no pinnae) fronds as 'Serratum' is always a vigorous grower far more tolerant of low humidity than its brethern and astounding visually if planted in the center of a hanging basket or urn to add a vertical art noveau touch to otherwise cascading plants--especially when combined with other ferns with a lower statured habit.

Nephrolepis species, the Boston Ferns, for the 2013 SEASON

The Boston Fern is always popular and comes in many variations. We offer some of the most distinctive variations below.

14002 NEPHROLEPIS BISSERATA FURCANS POLYPO CGH HP $ 6.75 "Fishtail Fern" Large; frond tips fork into sections; this is a very large statured robust fern demanding a considerable space when mature--as tolerates full sun, now also a popular deck subject--but will take some time to achieve. Jones classifies as N. falcata forma furcans. Slow to start, but strong to finish--never allow this to chill! For windowsill pots and mixed combination plantings we recommend the following tidier (and less agressive) dwarf selection:

14009 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA BUTTONS [GARRETTII] POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Tatting ribbon Fern" Small erect, then somewhat arched fronds with all pinnae reduced to rounded buttons along the rachis--larger statured than N.C. 'Duffii' with appearance of Pellaea rotundifolia. Also called 'Patty Roosevelt' even though, like all the cordifolia cultivars, this forms weird subsurface tubercules resembling sci-fi cocoons and thus is not an exaltata cultivar at all!

14004 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA FLORAL FANTASY POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Floral Fantasy Fern" Upright rachis sports monstrose and undulate pinnae. Rather tolerant of dry conditions, thus a handsome house plant for a vertical effect. Must have full sun to flourish and maintain its leathery rigidness--an thus not a successful house plant for most people. Very slow growing selection.

11649 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA HANDY POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Very dark green mounding "Dwarf Petticoat Fern" with fronds closely ranked with glossy crinkly pinnae; when a frond reaches 6" to 8" it starts to crest by forking and reforking at the tips. Give this little forker good light and keep evenly moist. Excellent houseplant; fabulous conservatory showoff.

14014 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA AUREA POLYP HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Golden Boston Fern" The heavy fronds are solid chartreuse yellow; makes a striking hanging basket subject; yet seems less vigorous than the similar golden variegated cultivar offered below in this listing of exaltata cultivars. Known as 'Delilah' in Australia & South America

14021 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA FRINGED VASE POLYP HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Fringed Vase Boston" This is a new introduction for the Glasshouse Works for Fall of 2010. We have it ready to start shipping in August, 2010. This can take a fair amount of sun. Very strong grower with many "fringed" ruffles all along the rachis of each frond. We highly recommend. Very tight growing and upright in habit. Sometimes labelled "Emerald Vase" or even "Floral Fantasy."

14025 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA HUBBARDII POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 A select dwarf clone from Michael Hubbard, larger than 'Wanamaka' but with similar erect bunched habit. Easy houseplant for limited space.

11652 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA MEDUSA POLYP HP PRICE: $ 9.00 "Medusa Boston" Great new Boston type from Australia. It has recently become available. We hope to have more pictures very soon. It grows upward and then arches out. Very strong plant and somewhat compact. Available in later April, 2012 . Order now.

11653 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA POM PON POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.50 'Pom Pon' could easily be called "The Cheerleaders' Fern"--but of course we will not stoop to such sorry humor! This is such a well behaved small statured Nephrolepis noted for each pinnae being quite rounded in outline that both growers and the public take to it instantly. The color is very consistenly a bright green and seems quite pest resistant. It forms a very tight and rounded and full ball in a haning basket.

11661 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA RITA'S GOLD POLYP HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Rita's Golden Boston Fern" The heavy fronds are solid golden yellow; makes a striking hanging basket subject. This plant is a new aquisition in 2010. It looks in many ways like the "Nephrolepis exaltata aurea." I would not order both. This seems to have more vigor and be a brighter gold. Check this out!!

14031 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA ROOSEVELTII POLYP HP PRICE: $ 22.00 "Roosevelt Fern" Each pinna crests only at the end. Unusual 'Gloriosa'selection with extremely elongated 4' plus fronds, some without crests, others exceptionally frilled. From an heirloom plant shared by F. W. Boehringer.

11554 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA SASSY POLYP HP PRICE: $ 9.25 "Table" fern or small hanging basket...quick, reliable, wonderfully improved cross between Compacta and Teddy Jr. This fern really fits its name, "Sassy". "Sassy" just looks fresh and sassy! Easy to grow, all plants in a block exhibit the same growth rate and uniform looks. Could work well in an assortment. Light green color really stands out. New introduction from Santa Rosa. We have offered their Suzi Wong for years; and people just love it too. This plant is a bit better for general use anywhere in the house.

11586 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA SUZI WONG POLYPOD GH PRICE: $ 7.50 Dwarf lacy selection--unlike most extremely delicate types, if adaquate moving air is available, the fronds do not discolor & brown easily, even though layer after layer of froth develops on each frond. Avoid excessive humidity; best with good air movement--thus even though it has the perfect appearance for your Wardian case, Suzi may not be the best choice for her lower skirts may get a bit messy if the humidity level is extreme that is, if your case is kept quite humid.!

14034 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA TRI-TIKI POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Deep green recurved pinnae criss-cross; very packed fronds with geometric riffs & valleys: combines the most levels w/ the most congested fronds of any cultivar we know and thus needs high humidity with excellent air movement to prevent rot and algae buildup in the interior of these thick fronds. The choice of compulsive collectors who need to grow the absolutely most completely over-the-top hyper ruffled "Boston Fern."

11405 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA VARIEGATA [PPAF] TGH POLYP PRICE: $ 18.00 The true "Variegated Boston Fern" with long dramatic fronds, with the individual pinnae green, gold, or typically striped green and gold--remarkably beautiful, certainly rare. From Exotic Foliage Nursery, [PPAF?]--this "Tiger" requires very bright indirect light and adequate air movement to best display its completely remarkable strong substanced foliage.

14035NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA VERONA LACE POLYPOD HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Sold out until further notice. "Verona Lace Fern" Very finely cut, lacy Boston cultivar from the old Easterbrook collection. One of the old standbys, but still excellent for extravagantly large hanging basket displays. Sometimes the old heirloom becomes the new star--seldom in the nursery trade as requires considerable time and patience for it to achieve its potential..

11558 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA WHITMANII POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 7.00 "Lace Fern" or "Feather Fern" with very fine pinnae creating a thick mist of delicate appearing fronds, yet does not demand high humidity. "Cordita's Ruffled" appears to be an alternative designation of this most excellent windowsill potplant.

10700 PELLAEA FALCATA POLYPOD HP TERR PRICE: $ 4.75 Dark emerald oval pinnae on erect fronds forming an attractive small fern. Requires lime to maintain deep tones as it grows to become a handsome house plant requiring pebble tray conditions.

10702 PELLAEA ROTUNDIFOLIA POLYPOD TERR HP PRICE: $ 5.50 "Button Fern" Dime-sized round dark green leaflets on wiry stems--perfect for the tall terrarium as long as the soil is sweet (a lime lover); much darker green and larger statured than Nephrolepis 'Duffii' the other "Button Fern." Newly offered again in 2012 .

10960 PHYLLITIS [ASPLENIUM] SCOLOPENDRIUM POLYP GH PRICE: $ 8.00 Rosette of knife-shaped frongs. Can often be grown outside in a milder clime than ours. This is the famous "Hart's Tongue" fern. There are several crested forms of this. We are offering the standard tongue form. The last picture is of a crested forms; perhaps we will have these in the future.

13040 PLATYCERIUM BIFURCATUM NETHERLANDS POLYPO HP PRICE: $ 15.00 While the most commonly found of all the "Staghorn Ferns" in cultivation, still one of the most beautiful off setting types--with the added attraction of thriving indoors.

13015 PLATYCERIUM SUPERBUM (SYN: GRANDE) POLYPO HP PRICE: $ 25.00 We are presently out of stock for this item until Spring 2010. Check back then. This is the standard form of the "Giant Elkhorn." This was known for years as Platycerium grande, now known to be the form only from the Philippines. This is the Australian giant staghorn. Refer to image. We only have a few plants available right now, but they are nice.

13041 PLATYCERIUM VEITSCHII LEMOINEI POLYPO CGH HP PRICE: $ 27.50 Robust French selection of this impressive "Staghorn Fern" with erect fronds covered with fabulous white tomentum--that is, a white pelted specimen. Beautiful when grown in a pot, but truely astounding when mounted on a plaque so that bright light and perfect air movement can bring out the fantastic white pelt.

10900 POLYPODIUM AUREUM BLUE FORM POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.50 "Blue Bears' Paw" Broad loose and just slightly undulate fronds and rhizomes intense blue. We are pleased to offer this 2013 SEASON an excellent clone of the original "Blue Bears Paw." This is not the wild form seen in trees in the south and it is not the ruffled "Mandianum" type! This is a selected form of the species with good growth habit and good blue color. See the photos! New for 2010.

10901 POLYPODIUM (PHLEBODIUM) AUREUM AREOLATUM POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.50 "Blue Bears' Paw" Broad rigidly erect fronds and rhizomes intense blue. The rhizome is less hairy than the species form. The blue color is powdery.

The Blue Ruffled Bear's Paw Fern

11424 PHLEBODIUM AUREUM MANDIANUM POLYP HP TGH 10.00 Newly available again for the 2013 SEASON! READY NOW! Price reduced! Manda's "Crisped Blue Fern" still offered as Polypodium 'Mandianum' in the trade. This has become very rare and hard to get hold of. No one is growing it anymore. We will have some available if you can wait a bit. Over stout basal "Hare's Foot" rhizomes clothed with silery blond hair arise graceful glaucous blue fronds with wavy deep lobes. Easy house plant.

11604 POLYPODIUM DIVERSIFOLIUM POLYPOD HP CGH PRICE: $ 7.50 Available from time to time. Check on availability. This footed fern sported dark glossy fronds and green foot with brown hairs. Rather interesting plant in the "Bear's Paw" fern group. Sometimes the common name of this plant is "Kangaroo Paw." It is also listed under the name "Phymatosorus diversifolius." This might be more correct, but the older name is good for listing here to see it along with the other "Bear's Paws." The fern also is sometimes listed as "Polypodium scolopendrium."

11657 POLYPODIUM FALLAX POLYPOD HP CGH PRICE: $12.00 We have these available at ths time. This footed fern is compact but highly crested and somewhat dwarf. It could possibly be a great subject for terrarium culture. It is not the easiest fern to care for, but it is worth the effort.. It needs a lot of lime, like some of the Maidenhairs do. We have been told it can grow on chaulk (but I would not this). Quite unusual. We feel very good that this is available this year. Order now! We have nice young plants.

11114 POLYPODIUM FORMOSANUM POLYPOD HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 The "Naked Rabbit Foot Fern," so called as the small bright chalk white rhizomes are not furred but seem to flow over the surface, dividing like "E.T.'s Fingers" under a very low canopy of beautiful delicately lobed bluish fronds. Easy once established--a tremendous performer on a mossed topiary globe..

11708 POLYPODIUM SPECIES KLEVY NOUD POLYPOD TGH PRICE: $ 45.00 Rubbery undulating leaves/erect fronds of heavy substance over the slim woody suface rhizome. Barry Yinger's catch (perhaps from Thailand?) of this short "Rubber Ribbon Fern" with its maroon midribs is very deliberate in growth rate.

11152 POLYSTICHUM TSUS-SIMENSE POL CGH HH HT PRICE: $ 6.50 "Painted Rock Fern" Miniature deep green fern; perfect for cool terrarium, while hardy enough for the protected woodland or sheltered trough.

11423 PSILOTUM NUDUM PSI HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 THIS ITEM IS SOLD OUT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE--DO NOT ORDER. "Whisk Broom Fern" We are leaving the listing here in case we are able to get it ready again. We are filling backorders now for this. We cannot keep up with the orders made for this plant! Primitive fern relatives with no true roots, yet a vascular plant with tiny scale leaves on the attractive branched stems; pantropic of easy pot culture if given perfect drainage and very bright light. This is a very slow deliberate grower for us and, quite frankly, the demand has overwhelmed our stock.

11601 PTERIS CRETICA ALBOLINEATA POLY PRICE: $ 4.25 Wildly winged fingered fronds are each elaborately patterned with pewter white centers; always popular "Victorian Table Fern" as is tolerant of a wide range of temperatures (do NOT freeze) and light intensities. Will make any companion pot glow as if accented by the most elaborate of Victorian doilies. Also good for terrariums.

11662 PTERIS QUADRIAURITA TRICOLOR POLYPO CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.25 Available Periodically. Inquire. One of our favorites. This "Victorian Table Fern" is called Tricolor but is more specifically a rubra-bronze and dark green color. It has fantastic new growth of bright cranberry red. An easy growing houseplant or even Wardian Case plant.

12232 QUERCIFILIX ZEYLANICUS POLYP CGH TERR PRICE: $ 18.00 Due to high demand currently, we need to accept orders for this very slow growing beauty on a propagate-to-order basis. "Oak Leaf Creeper" Dwarf fern from Ceylon with dimorphic fronds held very low and tight. Terrarium Fern--very slow growing; very shallow wiry roots; must have high levels of humidity and fibrous media. This gem is a collector's excuse to start a Wardian case. Due to high demand currently, we need to accept orders for this very slow growing beauty on a propagate-to-order basis.

11237 SCYPHULARIA PENTAPHYLLA [DAVALLIA] POLYP TGH PRICE: $ 8.25 "Red Finger Fern" Coarsely cut pinnate fronds; strong rhiz. is covered with dark nonciliate scales. Very handsome cousin to the more common Davallia but with "Black Caterpillar Fern rhizomes. This New Guinea native needs warm locations.

11468 SELAGINELLA BRAZIL [SPECIES] SEL HP CGH PRICE: $18.00 "Brazillian Clubmoss" Arched wiry caulescent 10" stems branch (in time) to many weeping sprays of delicate-appearing scale-like leaves. Slow to establish, but most distinctively elegantly tall. Gives height in a sophisticated wardian case design. This tall species is quite slow to establish, but eventually quite impressive.

11416 SELAGINELLA FAIRY PLUME [SPECIES] SEL HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.50 Unidentified species from Southeast Asia with slim erect stems arching at top under weight of chartreuse plumes--possibly a compact form of S. victoriae. Must have rest period mid-winter; may reach one foot in height if given enough time.

11412 SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA AUREA SEL TGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.00 "Golden Clubmoss" Short arching stems form bright mat; essential in any terrarium to brighten the design.

11453 SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA BROWNII SEL TERR HP PRICE: $ 7.25 "Emerald Isle" or (although native to S. Africa) "Scotch Moss." Very compact, much branched stems eventually creating tiny cushions--excellent for extremely small terariums. Merely fabulous--but site it so it will not be swamped by or swallowed up by a more vigorous neighbor. Please, please, please do not expect a large plant when you order this--it starts out tiny and it stays tiny; if you need a larger plant, please order one of its kin.

11624 SELAGINELLA KRAUSIANA GOLD TIPS SEL CGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.50 OFTEN LIMITED AVAILABILITY Fabulous ferny carpet with all new growth tipped bright yellow against the darker mature clubmoss foliage--not as vigorous or as highly colored as 'aurea.'

11413 SELAGINELLA MARTENSII ALBOLINEATA SEL HP TERR PRICE: $6.75 "Snowy Club Moss" Arched, yet creeping, prostrate brittle, much-divided stems winged with scale-like glossy leaves with irregular patches of pure bright white--astoundingly beautiful. Mexican species for the larger terrarium. Rare cultivar yet not difficult given good humidity.

11656 SELAGINELLA MARTENSII FROSTY SEL HP TERR PRICE: $ 8.00 "Frosted Club Moss" Arched, yet creeping, prostrate brittle, much-divided stems winged with scale-like glossy leaves with new growth and tipe growth Frosted cream to white. Mexican species for the larger terrarium. New cultivar yet not difficult given good humidity.

11625 SELAGINELLA MOELLENDORFII SEL CGH TERR PRICE: $ 5.50 Beautiful soft toned "Club Moss" valued for terrarium and bonsai bases; tolerates chill; slow to establish, especially if not give cool temperatures during its winter rest.

11427 SELAGINELLA PALLESCENS [EMMELIANA] SEL TERR PRICE: $ 6.50 "Sweat Plant" Fine terrarium plant growing in circular rosette arching vase forms with very fine foliage noted for holding droplets of condensation, thus "sweating"-- Venezuela, Z10. Very similar habit to moellendorfii, but much slower growing and a touch more basil green in coloration.

11472 SELAGINELLA PLANA SEL TERR TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Strong erect stems hold bright branched fans of shimmery foliage. Very distinctive beautiful "Spikemoss Cypress" species achieving more dramatic height than most of the tropical "Clubmosses." Certainly not "creepy." Unmatched for giving an exceptionally elegant vertical effect in a wardian case or larger terrarium; but remember that this is very tropical and thus, unlike various Selaginella species offered here, is not tolerant of chill.

11414 SELAGINELLA POSADA #15 [SPECIES] SEL HP TERR PRICE: $ 6.50 LIMITED AVAILABILITY Curly-fingered "fronds" intermingle into sea-green tostled carpets; uniquely colored unidentified Central American coming to us from the collection at Kew Gardens.

11478 SELAGINELLA UMBROSA SEL HP TERR PRICE: $ 15.00 "Red Clubmoss" Dark reddish stems give bronze mahagony tone to the abbreviated deep green leaves; tossled waves of short foliage make this Mexican a collector's choice. Small statured plants. Avoid extreme heat and deep shade.

11485 SELAGINELLA UNCINATA SEL TERR CGH $ 8.00 Available again later Fall and 2010. "Peacock Moss" "Rainbow Fern" Climbing and rambling stems, much branched, with blue tinted dimorphic scale "leaves" in four ranks. Sometimes looks like an oil slick. Becomes rather brownish sometimes during its dormant winter cycle, but fear not--just keep cool, moist, and very bright and behold, new blue foliage emerges come spring. Slightly seasonal.

11401 TECTARIA CICUTARIA [GEMMIFERA, HORT.] POL HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 "Button Ball Fern" Upright rhizomes with gracefully arching tripinnate fronds (triangular in overall outline) with a series on rounded button-like bulbils along the top of the central midrib. Caribbean tolerant of indoor conditions. A fern no child can resist.

SOME PERENNIAL FERN SPECIES

11600 ADIANTUM PEDATUM *POLYPOD HT PRICE: $ 4.50 Elegant maroon polished stems hold aloft the semi-circle of dainty fronds of our native "Hardy Maidenhair Fern" which loves a hint of lime from time to time and grows best in high shade, unless the site never completely dries out. Use the tropical species offered in the TROPICAL SECTION for terrarium and houseplant subjects. This species is for winter hardy woodland conditions.

11659 ATHYRIUM ANGUSTUM RUBELLUM FEL HT PRICE: $ 6.50 "Red Stem Lady Fern."

11658 ATHYRIUM FILIX-FEMINA VICTORIAE FEL HT PRICE: $ 7.50 "Victoria's Lady Fern". Architectural three dimensional fronds created by quite tiny pinnae. Impressive, given time.

10060 ATHYRIUM GOERINGIANUM PICTUM POLYP PRICE: $ 4.75 "Japanese Painted Fern." Diciduous fern with elegant pink to silver centered fronds. Best grown outside with some protection from sun and wind.

11616 ATHYRIUM GEORINGIANUM PICTUM CRISTATUM POLYPOD HT PRICE: $ 6.75Charming "Crested Japanese Painted Fern". Forming elegant clumps of silvery fronds emerging pink toned, each mature frond forking at the tip to form a crested fishtail. Quite winter hardy in our Ohio location.

11650 ATHYRIUM GHOST (HYB) POLYP HT PRICE: $ 10.00 Nancy Swell's "Ghost Fern" with the upright vertical habit from the A. filix- femina and the fabulous silvery platinum tones and reddish rachis of the other parent, A. nipponicum 'Pictum'--most impressive. So highly colored as to be slow in establishing in its site, but certainly earns its place.

89214 ATHYRIUM FELIX-FEMINA LADY IN RED (HYB) POLYP HT PRICE: $ 7.00 Great "English Lady Fern" with red pinnae and delicate form. Quite hardy to go in the shade garden. New to Glasshouse Works in 2010.

11594 ATHYRIUM NIPPONICUM PICTUM URSULA'S RED POLYPO HI PRICE: $ 5.00 Available in summer of 2010. "Purple Painted Fern" A large statured clone of this Japanese native with gray silver accented with red-maroon tones found in the Long Island garden of Alex Summer. From the South Carolina gardens of Ursula Syre-Herz. Thrives in our climate.

11568 DRYOPTERIS FILIX-MAS LINEARIS POLYDACTYLA FEL HT PRICE: $10.00 PRICE: $6.50 "Many-fingered Male Fern" Elongated pinnae with wild tip crests; heavily textured vase shaped plant evergreen in mild winters. We are offering this with a discount for the spring/summer period. We have nice plants at this time. It is sometimes listed as "Dryopteris filix-mas cristata King Fern" and "Dryopteris affinis cristata The King."

11660 DRYOPTERIS GOLDIANA FEL HT PRICE: $ 7.00 "Goldie's Giant Wood Fern" winter hardy in Zones 3 through 8 is one of the largest North American natives with rich deciduous fronds of considerable stature. Prefers moist soils with high shade to thrive.

41589 EQUISETUM ARVENSE EQU HT PRICE: $ 5.00 "Skirted Horsetail" Clumps of foot tall hollow stems with each joint sprouting a whorl of elegant weeping stemlets; deciduous herb hardy in Z6 outside, spreading in sandy sun drenched locations. After a marvelous spring display, starts to disappear in the summer heat, often dormant/deciduous during all of late summer. An interesting native with a medicinal reputation, quite fabulous as emerges in the early spring; but due to early summer dormancy this native is more a botanical than horticultural wonder; never happy containerized.

40246 EQUISETUM DIFFUSUM EQU HP CGH AQ PRICE: $ 8.75 "Tropical Horsetail" Soft gray green central stems form a tiny bamboo-like thicket: each central stem, with delicately nodding tip, is ringed with skirts of lateral stemlets to create intricate patterns; marvelous pot plant. Will survive some winters in our zone if the ground barely freezes, but best grown as a cool greenhouse subject.

40247 EQUISETUM HYEMALE EQU HP HH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Horsetail" Clumps of grooved green reed-like maroon-ringed stems bear conelike sporing structures at tips; high silica content makes them "Scouring Rushes" for pots. Their extreme vertical aspect makes them a decorative must for shallow pool/bog designs; while their primitive aspect makes them a favorite in very contemporary garden designs--especially as is quite evergreen, persisting all winter if not exposed to excessive windtunnel conditions.

40249 EQUISETUM TRISERIALE EQU HP HH CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Low growing colonies of bright green erect 2" to 4" wiry wands; this is similar to E. variegatum, but the finer, less rigid stems which form lovely interlaced mats are a far brighter green fall color than E. variegatum. Lovely in pots or borders; a true visual gem (with ease of culture--full light and moist feet) for that micro primitive aura.

11500 OSMUNDA REGALIS OSM HT PRICE: $ 8.75 "Royal Fern" Given a moist location with protection from severe sunstroke, this will easily outlive any gardener: a long term project worth your patience as the elegant foliage arises in a more dramatic display every year.

11470 PTERIDIUM AQUILINUM POLYPOD HT PRICE: $ 11.50 "Bracken" or Pasture Brake" Coarse green fronds to four feet densely hairy beneath. Cosmopolitan distribution. This is regulated as a pernicious weed in some Western states--check with your county agent before ordering this brute of a fern. In our climate this dramatic fern must be situated in full sun and poor soil to survive and flourish, soon failing in shade or fertilized beds. Seldom offered in containers in the nursery trade as tends to dwarf unattractively in pots. Emphatically not a container subject; predictably a brute in any sunny garden. Q: Why do we offer this? A: Ken loves weeds. Or: digging this character from the front beds builds character.
