56052 BEGONIA GRANDIS EVANSIANA BEG CGH H PRICE: $ 4.00 (tuberous) The "Hardy Begonia" survives sub-zero with mulch; canes with olive green leaves, red-accented, & with clouds of pink blossoms freely produced early fall; this slug resistent novelty also performs well in containers.

56725 BEGONIA KAYLEN [HYB] HH HT CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 (semp) (semp)"Hardy Wax Begonia" Appears to be an unusually full statured, dark foliaged "Wax Begonia" with easily produced rose pink (to red) blossoms; but beneath the soil it forms real tubers--has survived short shots of zero degress in Atlanta (of course, the soil was not frozen).We repeat this; we do not guarentee this. I have talked with the person who introduced and registered this plant with the American Begonia Society. We have found out that it was introduced in 1994 (mid nineties). The plant to first introduced by Craig Walker who named the plant after his grand daughter, Kaylen. He says that is it hardy in his area, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He originally distributed it through Allan Armitage.

While slow growing, this is a very beautiful distinctive clone, gaining popularity as a dense accent in a collection of container plants, especially in the cool (that is, for Camellias or Cymbidiums) hobby greenhouse or conservatory. Left to its own devices, this "Weeping Variegated English Box" achieves an upright fountain shape, reaching a full seven feet in height in a mere twentyfive year period.

Perhaps the alternate name of 'National' reflects its selection from seedlings at the Blandy Experimental Farm (in Virginia) around 1936 and named by Lynn Batdorf.

We follow the European and Asian nomenclature and consider the slim lime yellow-rimmed form (with narrower outline) to be 'Elegantissima' and the bright gold oval leaved form to be 'Sunburst.' These various clone names are very very mixed up in the nursery trade.
