FRAGRANT PLANTS

Many FRAGRANT PLANTS need greenhouses to successfully bloom, even though we've included fragrant Hoyas, Pereskia, Sansevieria, Solandra, Eucharis, Myrtus, and others in other sections of this catalogue. For some very very scented (but definitely not frangrant) blossoms check Amorphophallus, Typhonium, Stapelia, and Huernia. For scented foliage we suggest Centrathermum, Salvia, Curcuma, Elletaria, Laurus, Lippa, MeNtha, Myrtus, Pelargonium, Piper, Plectranthus, Pogostemon, Aeolanthus, and so on.

42196 BRUGMANSIA CANDIDA DOUBLE WHITE [PLENA] SOL CGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 Handsome double flowered "Angel's Trumpet" leaves the viewer rather breathless. Dark pelted foliage distinct. Customers report this to easily produce heavily scented blossoms more reliably than others in a greenhouse setting; branches easily; seems to respond well to the restriction of containers. Visitors have told us that this seems to be the hybrid known as 'Grand Marnier' in England.

Batcheller hybrid. Dormancy cycles seem somewhat random over the years--constant warmth can nearly eliminate the cycle but may reduce the vigor of the plant.

41153 HEDERA COLCHICA SULPHUR HEART ARAL HP CGH HH PRICE: $ 6.75 A cultivar of this thickly-substanced "Persian Ivy," native from the Caucasus to Iran, with beautiful yellow ochre leaf centers turning saffron during cool winters as the green borders become a chocolate purple tone; spicy aromatic foliage. Known in England as 'Paddy's Pride'. Hardy outdoors here if given a very sheltered location--but even in Z6b here leaves burn simply because of their sheer surface size.

Malaysian native beautifully displayed in small baskets to present the dangling scented flower clusters easily or trained on a moss topiary. Certainly the least challenging small statured cascading species to easily bloom as a houseplant.

62643HYLOCERUS GUATAMALENSIS CAC TGH PRICE: $ 7.75 Famous edible Guatamalan "Dragon Fruit" follows the most remarkable nocturnal intensely fragrant foot long white blossoms which emerge from the most impressively statured three winged glaucous clambering stems of this semi-epiphytic big-boned Cactus. Typically sent in dry moss--although potted ones are often mailed as well. Be warned that this is a very very big boned vine.

41102 IBOSA [TETRADENIA] RIPARIA LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 "Musk Plant" or "Misty Plume Plant" Attractive woody-stemmed shrublet with attractive small musk-scented leaves and creamy-white winter blossom panicles creating a beautiful whispy mist around Christmas time--thus its great popularity with Victorian gardeners and continued fascination for today's hobby greenhousers. Called "Nutmeg Bush" in England; used as a moth repellent in its native Africa. This is the real thing--not the "Iboza" of the trade which is usually the trailing basket plant is more accurately identified as Plectranthus madagascarensis, a cascading mint.

99104 JASMINE: TRUE SPECIES COLLECTION: We send a selection of 5 actual Jasminum species for PRICE: $22.00; these will demand very bright, evenly cool fall and winter conditions, and reliable humidity levels in order to set flower buds. If you are unable to provide these very strict fall conditions, best try the following collection instead in order to achieve the fragrant blossoms.

99105 JASMINE: PLANTS CALLED JASMINE: Should you lack the cool, humid, very bright conditions demanded by the bulk of the true species but still want the intense fragrances, we can select a group collectively known (because of their type of fragrance) by the common name "Jasmine" such as specific species of Cestrum, Solanum, Pandorea, Stephanotis, certain Mandevilla, specific Gardenia, & Trachleospermum, as well as those true ones (such as the Sambac crew) reliably performing well indoors. 5 plants @ PRICE: $18.00

42025 JASMINUM BEESIANUM OLE CGH HH PRICE: $ 6.00 "Rose Jasmine" from Western China. Zone 7 clambering vine with pairs of sharply pointed lance leaves and dark rose pink fragrant blossoms. Must have full sunlight to perform well. Our stock plants have happily lived outdoors in an exposed coldframe for many years, blooming heavily every late spring. This vigorous vine will not form flowerbuds with out a chilly fall.

41428 JASMINUM FLORIBUNDUM OLE CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Pink tinted fragrant blossom clusters on vine with clouds of glossy opposite small pinnate leaves giving a lacy appearance. Easy in containers. Evergreen in zone 9 and warmer. Quite slow to extablish. "Floridum" refers to a "Southern" origin--not to a USA state.

Basic to any collection, the Yunnan native is quite vigorous. Very very strongly scented--the one traditionally trained into Christmas season blooming live wreaths.

40422 JASMINUM SAMBAC OLE HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Arabian Jasmine" Wide oval leaves on woody climbing shrub; one inch wide heavy white single fls of intense fragrance-- traditionally used to flavor tea. "Pikake" blossoms fade to palest violet throughout the year--sacred to Vishnu. This clone from the National Botanic Garden's collection is very slow maturing (unlike the following commercial selections) and not notably vigorous even in greenhouse conditions.

Yinger kindly shared this potentially difficult (because a cold greenhouse subject in far northern winters) creature with us; these are small rooted established cuttings--and since taken from mature wood, are inclined to bloom very early on under your careful supervision. Much in demand with the hobby greenhouse crowd so current availability can be less than immediate, although we have kept up admirably the last two seasons--as we have found this glorious prima donna to be impossibly difficult to ship during the heat of summer, we thus will hold your summer order until early fall. We have one specimen at the nursery here which as now survived seven winters outdoors without any severe damage.

Excellent houseplant--the name refers to the scent of the blossoms (we feel serious delusional imagination is involved with this botanical decision).

Wide flattened rosette of thick wide stiftly undulant leaves richly mottled pale green on black-emerald; astonishing cone-shaped inflorescence of greenish-white scented blossoms (we say "scented"; we do not say "fragrant" as do some books and catalogues). Zanzibar native. (Actually they may indeed smell of greenish-white.)

Nonetheless, always a favorite as a vigorous intensely fragrant windowgarden plant.

We find that this lance leaved species usually needs to reach some size before reliably blooming. This tends to have unpredictable cycles, so best inquire as to availability before ordering. Needs sun and humidity to perform well, thus sometimes a challenge as a houseplant.

Demands bright light & even moisture for best results (not an ideal houseplant)--a traditional favorite in northern hobby greenhouses as produces much interest in mid-winter flower & late spring fruit with very low maintenance.

Certainly the easiest and most dramatic for the hobby greenhouse; equally wonderful if brought out into your outdoor display pool for the summer (but does best if not submerged). Unlike most variegated Crinum cultivars, if given adequate warmth, this one NEVER drops foliage in a cycle of dormancy or in a fit of stubbornness, but incrementally adds more and more fantastically white striped succulent leafs to create a magnificent specimen.

51152 CRINUM JAPONICUM SHIMA-IRE AMARY CGH PRICE: $ 35.00 Large clone with bright central banded variegation on each ( broad fleshy leaf held in a crown of foliage above the long necked stem); R. Bennett's excellent clone which presents impressively fragrant blossoms--these immense heads of tubular ivory flowers are best initiated by letting the old mature bulb dry enough during the summer to enter a dormancy period. Start watering (or simply set in a pan kept full of water) heavily early fall to bring forth the richly scented winter flowers along with fresh brightly variegated foliage.

53502 PIPER AURITUM PIP PRICE: $ 17.50 "Root Beer Plant" or "False Sasparilla" Strictly a greenhouse plant with rigidly erect thick bamboo like stems supporting dramatic marvelously soft fragrant leaves. (Nonetheless, some of our customers tell us that they have grown it in a two gallon pot in their plant room.) These leaves play an important role in South American Andean cooking--a more pungent version of corn husks in Mexican cuisine. A wonderful and exotic specimen only demanding reliable warmth and reasonable levels of humidity to become a dramatic punctuation mark in your collection.
