ALTERNANTHERA varieties for the 2010 SEASON

JOSEPH'S COAT. Despite their ongowing nomenclatural chaos, these traditional mainstays of grandma's windowsill are being rediscovered a key to any valid Victorian outdoor bedding scheme or an an antidote to monochromatic daylily or Hosta beds--and especially for disguising a dormant spring bulb bed. Although you need not reach the Alternanthera saturation level of Disneyworld, why not go boldly forth designing your initials out of "Calico Plants" in an annual bed or even a full floral clock (perhaps with the assistance of Iresine & mini Coleus). Sorry, we will not be held responsible for any lapses of taste in your designs! Would you like an introduction to these flashy charmers? Try our ALTERNANTHERA COLLECTION as Stock #99687 for 5 plants for only PRICE: $15.00. Whether "Joseph's Coat", "Parrot Leaf", or "Calico Plant"--all great flashy sinfully cheap fun.
If you want these for their namesake, Joseph, and his famous garment, please indicate on your Alternanthera Collection order that you want "Joseph's Coat" types. To order individual species, see A. amoena, and A. ficoidea in the "A" page of our Tropicals section.

TROPICAL RELIGIOUS PLANTS

Below are links to all of our Garden Art Galleries

65045 ALOE MACULATA [SAPONARIA] LIL HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 "Christmas Candles" From wide fleshy rosette arise spikes with large coral-red tubular flowers mid-winter. Handsome. Called "Soap Aloe" to indicate a practical use of the richly sappy succulent leaves.

30582 AMORPHOPHALLUS KONJAC [RIVIERI] ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Voo Doo Bulb" or "Umbrella Arum" from SE Asia. Fingered, whorl-crescent lf over purple-spotted petiole (the hollow stalk); fetid liver-purple spathe; edible corms (preparation, however, remains obscure in the literature). Also known as "Devil's Tongue" or "Leopard Palm," this is winter hardy for us here in Z6 in a very protected location in the garden which has perfect drainage to avoid winter rot and a frost line never reaching more than an inch or so; however, the foliage seldom emerges before June as the soil needs to warm considerably in order to initiate the budding. We recommend container culture or winter tuber storage techniques in areas north of the subtropics for real success.

66270 ASTROPHYTUM MYRIOSTIGMA CAC CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 "Bishop's Cap Cactus" Prominently ribbed spineless globes with entrie surface spotted white; odd yellow blossoms. Mexican.

56018 BEGONIA CATHEDRAL [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 (rz) "Stained Glass Beg." Ruffled, cupped bronzy leaves with large "windows" of translucent ochre; fantastic yet vigorous growing heirloom hybrid--especially effective grown in a small hanging baskets so one can easily look through the nearly impossibly transparent windows elegantly arranged in a wide fan of oval fenestrations appearing on each fluted leaf. The favorite crested leaved Begonia of children--even children in their sixties.

59201 BRUGMANSIA INSIGNIS SINGLE WHITE SOL TGH CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 "White Angel's Trumpet" Large white dangling flowers with heady nocturnal fragrance are produced with great abandon from vigorous elegantly branched stems--considered the most elegant of the tribe and most likely to get its photo in a book. Possibly versicolor arborea.

60017 CEROPEGIA LINEARIS WOODII ASC HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 "Rosary Vine" or "String of Hearts" Thread-like vine with large "rosary bead" tubercles and small pairs of heart-lvs designed with bright silver surfaces. Dependable tried and true houseplant unless you overwater!

41363 CITRUS MEDICA SARCODACTYLIS RUT CGH HP PRICE: $ 15.00 LIMITED SUPPLY "Buddha's Hand/Fingers" Strong woody stems carry the amazing odd very large elongated fruit of this indian species--at the end of the citron fruit extend thick "fingers" of green rind, rind which appears as the citron cubes in fruitcake. Sometimes in short supply--please check before ordering.

42333 COLEUS HYBRIDUS CHRISTMAS CANDY LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 leaves randomly splashed with rose red, magenta, cream and deep green. The brightest leaf, making this our best seller on sight--and after offering this for many years, we still ship out more of this magnificent creature than any other Coleus hybrid.

32507 COLEUS HYBRIDUS RELIGIOUS RADISH LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Rich reds overlaid with maroon-chocolates radiating from the center; probably an old heirloom selection as has the colors of 'Crazy Quilt' & is used extensively in Canadian bedding (yes: tolerates the first fall chills rather well). Absolute favorite of many of our customers as the clone we have selected and reselected forms a richly saturated warm colored blanket in the border or container, as it self branches readily to form a low "shrub" of very wide habit. Has become rather infamous from coast to coast for its richly saturated colors.

69047 COLEUS HYBRIDUS RELIGIOUS RUDABAGA LAB TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 A sport with golden caramel and gatorade green splashes over the more somber red and plum mocha tones of 'Religious Radish'--Ken Frieling has reselected this sport found at GHW over the last several years for a very vigorous and strikingly beautiful wide growing urn subject. If this sports, we'll have to discern yet another vegetable's inner spirtual potential.

51761 COLEUS HYBRIDUS SATANIC EMBERS FF03 LAB TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Fabulous. Slim upright eggplant purple stems cloaked with furled fantastic small purplish umber and damask violet leaves highlighted with a burning glow of orange sienna, fading to chili reds and sultry carmine. Frieling's lucky cross of 'Dragon's Claw' x 'Noonday Moon' resulted in what several garden clubs decided must be a summer blooming Poinsettia! Also quite successful as a winter pot plant (if you can give it bright light or a lightgarden spot) and a natural for indoor litegardens as the dimensions are quite compact, the foliage reliably congested in a rumple of hues. Has been very popular with Asian visitors to the gardens.

d d 66791 EUPHORBIA MILII THAI GIANT HYBRIDS EUP HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 The remarkable "Thai Giant Crown of Thorns" do have clonal names--but these will be offered without as we've only a few of each color. Giant leaves are matched by the quarter sized flower bracts (cyathophylls)--easy houseplant; monster effect! We have white, red, orange, yellow, spotted and pink in rotation. You can suggest the color range you would prefer to receive--however, we prefer to send you the best looking one at the time we mail your order.

40293 FICUS RELIGIOSA MOR TGH CGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Available again. We will be offering this again as soon as stocks are sufficient. We are out the season at this time. "Bo Tree" or "Sacred Fig" Heart-shaped, very long-tailed leaves can be deciduous during winter; sacred to Hindus and Buddhists as "Peepul" or "Bohdi" enlightenment tree; thickened basal (caudiform) trunks form on these seedlings.

40641 MARANTA REPENS [HORT] MAR HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 "Miniature Prayer Plant" Moss green demure leaves attractively brushed with chocolate "Rabbit Tracks"; reliable, although shy to exhibit its pale mauve dancing skirted flowers with their purple eyelash lines. Petite enough for terrarium culture.

40664 NEOMARICA GRACILIS IRI HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.25 "Apostle Plant" Fans of leaves with spikes of Iris fls of pale lilac with brown, yellow, blue; spikes deeply arch to touch a nearby surface (thus "Walking Iris") as new plantlets form where earlier the flowers bloomed. Central American species with delicate fragrance.

53558 PEPEROMIA DOLABRIFORMIS PIP HG TGH PRICE: $7.50 A fine addition to any collection. 59258 PODOCARPUS HENKELII POD CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 "Buddhist Pine" Beautiful Natal species with lustrous weeping broad needles spirally arranged on furrowed shoots; good in containers, as a specimen the dark gray bark exfoliates in long strips. Newly popular as a bonsai subject; also excellent as a long term subject for a standard. Zone 10.

99013 RHIPSALIS COLLECTION: Mossed cuttings of these marvelous epiphytic "Mistletoe Cacti." 10 mossed cuttings @ PRICE: $22.50

50570 RHOEO SPATHACEAE [DISCOLOR] COMM TGH HP PRICE: $ 8.25 The large statured traditional "Moses in a Boat" or "Oyster Plant" so called for the open oyster shell shaped bracts from which peep the white spiderflowers--boat shaped bracts tucked between the thickly packed outthrust fleshy green leaves, purpled beneath. Now more correctly named Tradescantia spathaceae, but seldom so identified in any plant book or magazine article. This is the one grandma grew.

50059 RUELLIA AMOENA [GRAECIZANS] ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 1.50 "Red Christmas Pride" Purple underleaf; scarlet pouch fls. Extremely vigorous and as popular now as in Victorian times when it filled that pre-poinsettia era with red blossoms at Christmas.
30684 SAUROMATUM VENOSUM [GUTTATUM] ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 "Voo Doo Bulb" under traditional name--and sometimes still offered as an Amorphophallus! For description see Typhonium venosum, the current botanically correct name.

40922 SOLANDRA MAXIMA [NITIDA] SOL TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 "Golden Chalice Vine" Enormous nine inch long yellow cupped trumpet flowers with five purple lines; on stout stems--a Mexican native essential for conservatory or porch garden. Various plant friends lug a tub of this substantial shrub (vining only when so encouraged) into their winter plantrooms for an amazing stunning early winter floral display. Horticulturally the opposite of "subtle."

40923 SOLANUM CAPSICASTRUM VARIEGATUM SOL CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.50 "Variegated Jerusalem Cherry" Famous Christmas shrub with bright orange tomato berries which start as green striped white marbles strikingly posed above the thick white-margined, soft leaves. Knockout. Remember that this is not a good plant around children, as the temptingly attractive fruit is not edible, and considered slightly toxic in the Little Golden Book of Old Wife's Plant Tales.

WINTER HARDY REVELATIONS

Gives an immediate tropical effect to a temperate zone garden. Cheapest way to quickly create a very big effect. Neighborhood kids have never been observed trying to climb one of these.

72800 HIBISCUS SYRIACUS HILLIS VARIEGATED MISS JILENE PPAF MAL HT PRICE: $ 25.00 "Miss Jilene Rose of Sharon" A fabulous introduction from Hillis Nursery in McMinnville.
